Particulate FiltersParticulate filters come in many configurations. Some designs utilize the body porosity. For example diesel filters allow exhaust gases to pass through a thin wall while retaining carbon particles. The honeycomb design blocks alternate cells so that 50% are open on inlet end and 50% are open on outlet end but no cell is a through passage. The exhaust enters the honeycomb through the inlet channels. Only gaseous exhaust products can pass through the side walls to the outlet channels. Particles are trapped. Molten metals are strained through either random open porosity or formed channels to remove solid particles. |
